Expats Leben: Wien und Zürich – A Personal Comparison
Hey everyone! So, I've spent a fair bit of time living abroad as an expat, and two cities that really stand out are Vienna and Zurich. Both are incredibly beautiful and offer amazing quality of life, but they're also very different. I thought I'd share my experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly, to help anyone considering a move to either place. It's gonna be a bit rambling, like chatting with a friend over coffee, so bear with me!
Vienna: Charm, Culture, and Affordable(ish) Living
Vienna… oh, Vienna. I fell head over heels for this city. The architecture is breathtaking, seriously, I'd spend hours just wandering the streets. There's so much history and culture oozing from every cobblestone. I remember one time, I got completely lost exploring the Prater amusement park – I know, I know, a total tourist moment! But that's the thing about Vienna, it's easy to get lost in its charm.
Cost of Living:
One thing that surprised me was the cost of living. While not dirt cheap, it's definitely more affordable than Zurich, especially housing. I found a pretty decent apartment for less than I expected. Food is also reasonably priced if you shop at local markets – avoid the tourist traps! Public transport is excellent and super affordable. I'd budget about €1500-€2000 a month for comfortable living, but that can vary widely depending on lifestyle.
The People:
Viennese people are… interesting. They're not necessarily the most outwardly friendly at first, but once you get to know them, they're incredibly warm and welcoming. Learning some basic German is essential, though. It opens up so many more opportunities to connect with locals. I made a bunch of friends through language exchange meetups – super fun and a great way to improve your language skills.
Downsides:
The bureaucracy can be a nightmare. I spent ages trying to sort out my residency permit – don't even get me started! Also, the weather can be… gloomy, especially in winter. Prepare for a lot of grey days.
Zurich: Swiss Perfection and a Hefty Price Tag
Zurich is another story altogether. It's incredibly clean, efficient, and modern. Everything works like a well-oiled machine, unlike the sometimes chaotic charm of Vienna. The views from the lake are simply stunning – I used to go for runs along the Limmatquai almost every day. Beautiful, pristine, picture perfect. However…
Cost of Living: Prepare for Sticker Shock
Zurich is expensive. Like, ridiculously expensive. Housing is astronomical, groceries are pricey, and even a simple coffee can cost a fortune. I had a pretty stressful first few months just trying to manage my finances. I swear I aged 5 years trying to find a decent apartment within a reasonable price range – this is no exaggeration. Expect to budget at least CHF 3000-CHF 4000 a month for a comfortable life. That's just the reality of living in Zurich.
The People:
Zurich is much more international than Vienna, you'll find people from all over the globe. This creates a more diverse social scene and it's easy to meet people from different backgrounds – but this international nature can also mean that it's harder to fully integrate into Swiss life. Learning German or Swiss German is a must for full immersion, though.
Downsides:
The high cost of living is definitely the biggest downside. Beyond that, the city can feel a bit impersonal at times, more like a corporate hub than a charming historical city.
The Verdict?
Both cities offer incredible things, but they cater to very different lifestyles. Vienna is charming, cultural, and (relatively) affordable, while Zurich is efficient, modern, and expensive. The choice really depends on your priorities and budget. Consider what's important to you and choose wisely. I hope my experiences help you navigate this decision! Let me know in the comments which city interests you and any questions you might have!
