Weggis Erdrutsch: Strasse Gesperrt – My Crazy Week in the Aftermath
Okay, so last week was, um, intense. I was planning a super chill hike near Weggis, you know, the kind where you just breathe in the fresh mountain air and snap some Insta-worthy pics. Little did I know, my peaceful weekend plans were about to get totally derailed.
The Day Everything Went Sideways
I woke up, bright and early, ready to conquer the Rigi Kaltbad trail. Beautiful morning, sun shining, birds chirping – the whole nine yards. Got my hiking boots on, grabbed my water bottle, and headed out. I'd checked the weather forecast, of course, which said sunny with a slight chance of showers. Slight chance, my foot!
About an hour into my hike, I saw the signs. "Strasse Gesperrt" – road closed. Ugh. My first thought was, "Great, now what?" Then, I started seeing the real damage. A massive Erdrutsch – a landslide – had blocked the main road near Weggis. It was absolutely crazy. Seriously, like something out of a movie. Huge chunks of rock and mud everywhere, tons of debris, and emergency vehicles buzzing around.
What I Learned (the hard way)
-
Check multiple sources for road closures: Don't just rely on one weather app or website. Look at official government sources for road closures like the Swiss Federal Roads Office (Astra) website. They usually have up-to-date information on road closures due to landslides or other incidents. Trust me, this is way more reliable than a random hiking blog.
-
Always have a backup plan: This seems obvious, but seriously, ALWAYS have a Plan B. My original plan was completely shot, so I had to improvise. I ended up taking a much longer, more challenging route, which added hours to my hike. I was totally unprepared for it. Next time, I'm packing extra snacks and water.
-
Understand the risks of hiking in mountainous regions: Switzerland is gorgeous, but the mountains are powerful and unpredictable. Landslides, like the one in Weggis, are a real risk, especially after heavy rain. Being prepared for unexpected events and always heeding warning signs is key to a safe experience. You can't be too careful.
The Aftermath and Getting Home (eventually)
Getting back was a whole other adventure. The detour added several extra hours to my journey. I was exhausted and seriously questioning my life choices – all I wanted was a comfy couch and some hot chocolate.
The whole experience was stressful, but it taught me some valuable lessons. I learned to be more prepared, more flexible, and more aware of potential dangers when exploring nature. You'd think I would have learned to pack better after years of hiking, but honestly? I still forget stuff. It's a work in progress, you know?
Next time I'm planning a hike near Weggis (or anywhere in the Swiss Alps!), I'll be super prepared. I'll check multiple sources for road closures, have a solid backup plan, and pack like I'm going on an expedition, even if it's just a short day trip. It’s better to be overprepared than underprepared.
