So, yeah, Osnabrück. I was really looking forward to a proper winter this year. You know, the kind with snowdrifts you can build a snowman out of, the kind where you can actually use your fancy new winter boots. Instead? We got… this. Nasskalt. Damp, cold, and frankly, a bit depressing. No picturesque winter wonderland, just grey skies and persistent drizzle. Bummer.

My Disastrous Attempt at a Winter Hike

I’d planned this epic winter hike around the Piesberg, right? Picture it: crisp air, a dusting of snow, maybe even a steaming mug of Glühwein halfway through. I even bought new hiking socks – merino wool, the fancy stuff. They were, like, 20 euros! Expensive socks for a potentially epic hike.

Instead, I ended up soaked to the bone. The "hike" was more like a soggy trudge through mud and puddles. My merino wool socks? Completely useless against the penetrating damp. I looked like a drowned rat. The Glühwein, which I'd carefully packed in a thermos, ended up lukewarm and kinda sad. The whole thing was a massive fail.

So, what did I learn from this soggy debacle? A few things, actually. First, always check the weather forecast – and I mean really check it. Don’t just glance at it and assume; look at the hourly breakdown, check the wind chill, the whole shebang. I totally skipped that step, and it bit me in the butt.

Even a simple walk along the Hase can be nice if you dress appropriately. Just ditch the hiking boots!

The moral of the story? Osnabrück’s winter can be unpredictable. Be prepared for anything, and you’ll have a much better time. Don't be like me—check the forecast, pack layers, and always have a Plan B. And for goodness sake, invest in good waterproof gear. Seriously, it's worth it!

So yeah, no epic winter hike this year. But I did learn a valuable lesson about weather preparedness – and the importance of having a decent cup of coffee on hand. Next year, I'm bringing my actual Gore-Tex jacket!
